Natural Gas Utilization Workshop

The 2nd Annual AIChE Natural Gas Utilization Workshop, held in College Station, Texas on July 31 – August 2, 2017, will bring together attendees from industry, government, and academia to look across the natural gas value chain.

Based on the outcomes of the workshop in 2016, the 2017 event will feature three topical sessions focusing on natural gas conversion and processing.

Topic Sessions

  1. Advances in catalyst/process chemistries for methane conversion
  2. Advances in reaction engineering and separations for methane conversion
  3. Novel, emerging technologies for modular gas processing

Each session will consist of a panel of invited speakers followed by moderated breakout sessions to build on panel presentations.  The goal of each session will be to call out high potential leads that have emerged or may emerge in each area along with key enablers to facilitate continued progress.

Background

In November 2016 the AIChE Working Group on Natural Gas Conversion and Utilization working with the Center for Energy Initiatives held the first workshop in a series focused on increasing the deployment of new technologies in the area of natural gas conversion.  This event brought together attendees from industry, government, and academia to look across the natural gas value chain to identify technology implementation hurdles.  Two key outcomes were highlighted during this meeting:

  • The need for truly step out technology options in the area of gas conversion to fuels/chemicals, with sufficient business incentive to offset the risk inherent in adopting a first-of-its-kind technology.  Step out technologies were seen as options with significant capital cost or performance benefits vs the more established technologies of methane to syngas to products via Fischer-Tropsch or methanol based chemistries.
  • The need for low capital, modular technologies that could lower the capital expense market entry barrier.  The workshop participants felt that viable, smaller scale options for gas conversion could serve two potential ends.  They could be used to manage technology risk by avoiding massive initial capital outlays and/or they could open up gas conversion to investors with non-traditional business models.

Objectives

  • Identify new technology options in the area of gas conversion to fuels/chemicals
  • Find sufficient business incentives to offset the risk inherent in adopting a first-of-its-kind technology
  • Achieve significant capital cost reduction or performance benefits vs the more established technologies of methane to syngas to products via Fischer-Tropsch or methanol based chemistries
  • Develop low capital, modular technologies that could lower the capital expense market entry barrier.
  • Identify smaller scale options for gas conversion for investors with non-traditional business models
  • Identify new chemistries for direct conversion of Methane, Ethane, Propane and higher hydrocarbons
