Even though energy consumption per square foot has been reduced by 32.4% over the last 8 years and water consumption reduced by 50% from 1997 through 2005, it is expected that Texas A&M energy costs will continue to skyrocket due to higher energy commodity costs. From FY94 through FY00, annual TAMU electricity and natural gas purchases averaged $18.6 million. From FY01 through FY05, annual TAMU purchased utility costs averaged almost $33 million. FY07 TAMU purchased utility costs will be near $59 million!!

Texas A&M University has done a good job of reducing energy consumption. However, with skyrocketing energy costs, it is even more imperative to promote energy and water conservation.

Every member of the campus community is affected:

  1. Everyone benefits by minimizing waste, reducing costs and ensuring the practice of good energy conservation.
  2. Reducing the cost of purchased utilities provides more funds to support teaching and research and can help avoid budget reductions and/or increases in fees and tuition.
  3. Energy conservation is good for the overall economy because it tends to reduce energy cost. Financial resources that would otherwise be spent on energy can be redirected to other investments that better serve society.
  4. Conserving energy is good for the environment due to lower emission levels (CO, SO2 and NOX) resulting in better air quality and preservation of natural resources.
