Research Summary
Dr. Duan’s research focuses on mechanical response of the Earth to natural and man-made disturbances, including natural earthquakes and hydraulic fracturing in natural/shale gas production. His expertise is numerical modeling of dynamic processes occurring on geometrically complex fault and fracture systems, and seismic wave propagation in realistic geologic structures. He develops a Finite Element Method code (EQdyna) to explore physical controls on earthquake dynamic rupture propagation, response of fault zones to nearby earthquakes, and physical limits on ground motion, and to examine interaction between hydraulic and natural fractures. Collaborating with computer scientists, he parallelizes EQdyna using a hybrid MPI/OpenMP approach to make use of modern computer clusters.
