Research Summary
The synthesis of new polymers and their integration into electrochemical devices (fuel cells, batteries, capacitors, electrochemical membranes for water purification) for enhanced performance is a focus of our laboratory. To develop a deep understanding of the factors that dictate enhanced device performance, we have developed a new in operando infrared spectroelectrochemical technique that allows us to investigate transport on a molecular-level with multiple driving forces simultaneously (e.g., concentration and voltage gradients). We combine our spectroscopy techniques with chemical, thermal, mechanical, and morphological characterization to build a comprehensive understanding of polymer property-device performance relationships to guide our synthetic design of new polymers.
